Emerson Albert Spratlen Etem (born June 16, 1992) is an American professional ice hockey right winger currently playing for the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was originally selected in the first round, 29th overall, by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded to the New York Rangers on June 27, 2015. ==Early life and family== Etem comes from a family where rowing is popular, and his African-American mother Patricia made the U.S. Olympic rowing team, though due to the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott, did not participate at the 1980 Games in Moscow. Patricia rowed in the four with coxswain at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Continuing with the rowing traditions of his family, Emerson's elder brother Martin is an Elite rower who is training to compete for the U.S. National Rowing Team. After a successful collegiate career at Syracuse University, Martin most recently trialled at the 2012 National Selection Regatta in the Men's Heavyweight Double Scull. Emerson has an older sister Elise, who also has had a successful athletic career. She was Wilson High School's Most Valuable Swimmer; swam for one season at University of California, Berkeley, and then walked on to the Women's Rowing team at the university. She became a captain of the crew in her senior year and ended her career as the Pac-12 Athlete of the Year and a CRCA All-American.
